*Special Performances on Saturday July 20th 3pm-6pm and new performances added to Sunday

The Source is pleased to present Chthonic Panic, a group exhibition featuring the work of Noel De Lesseps, Saskia Friedrich, Jeremy Grosvenor, Sissel Kardel, William Kim, Zarina Nares, Mamoun Nukumanu, Rafael Sanchez & Kathleen White, Jo Shane

as well as performances by Melvin Grave Guzman and others.

This show investigates how artists interface with a world that has gone mad. French philosophers Deleuze & Guattari suggest that by blurring the lines between sanity and insanity, one subverts networks of power and control, carving a new path forward.

Chthonic (pro. thonic) refers to the subversion of the Apollonian in favor of the Dionysian. The Apollonian consists of hierarchical, linear, arborescent power while the Dionysian is rhizomatic, multivalent and mycelial collaboration. Panic refers to Pan, the god of the wild, a Dionysian figure whose name is implicated in the etymologies of pandemonium.

In the ancient world, the chthonic forces under the earth were thought to be the source of prophetic inspiration. In this rich realm of elemental energies, a reality proliferates that has long been demonized by canonical thought but nonetheless remains untouched. Each artist has been selected for their ability to embody a glimmer of the chthonic realms and step outside the known streams of vision.

This event will take place at The Source Woodstock, located at 4228 Route 212 in the hamlet of Lake Hill, NY. The outdoor exhibition space is located on lands that were once sacred to the Munsee and Lenape people. Once part of a farm in the 19th century, the property turned into a Beaux Arts style artist’s retreat founded in 1909. During this time many artists came to Woodstock, including Hervey White, creator of the early maverick Colony, who is credited with shaping the vision of Woodstock as a ‘Colony of the Arts.’ In 2019 The Source Woodstock opened its doors as an experimental space for sustainable community.

Chthonic Panic will be open to the public on Saturday, July 20th from 1-6pm and Sunday, July 21st from 1-5pm.

On Saturday from 3pm-6pm there will be a special artist’s reception highlighting the work of performance artist Melvin Grave Guzman, who will be performing an art-ritual to activate the land with ancestral offerings of Tobacco and other herbs.

And an ambient set, Listening Sky, with local artist John Thayer.

On Sunday, July 21, artist Roger van Voorhees will read from his new book If with Insistence on the Tension Gravity as Intercessor a Future Interject at the Dolmen site at The Source.

Admission is free.
